Montreal 1/4 Finals: Federer Tanks Strategically against Tsonga, Has Everyone Fooled for the US Open

Lol. Having seen some of the ridiculous posts by the Rafa fans on forums, I thought I might as well have some fun myself. After all, Roger is the GOAT now, and losing in the quarter finals of a MS event should really not be that big a deal. Even though it would have been nice for him to meet Murray, it’s all about the slams and I doubt this loss will do anything to his confidence. I mean he just comes off winning the French Open and Wimbledon in succession for the first time. I didn’t see the third set against Tsonga today, but it seems to me that Roger is still adjusting to becoming a parent. Of course much is gonna be made of this loss from Roger, but only because he is the GOAT. Every single loss from Roger these days are a big deal, exactly because he is such a legend.
But like I said, becoming a parent is no small thing, and it could well be that Roger is still adjusting. You have to realize that there is a Roger before his kids were born, and a Roger after they were born. I haven’t had kids myself, but from what I’ve heard and what I can imagine, it changes a lot. I’m not saying that all of a sudden Roger will not care about tennis anymore. That is not what I’m saying. I just think it is a huge event in his life, and honestly I won’t blame him if it takes a while for him to sort out his priorities again. Roger has made it clear that he wants to continue playing tennis at the highest level, so for now I don’t think there is anything to worry about for his fans. Just think about how much have been happening in Roger’s life of late.
First of all he won the French Open which he has never done before. Then he won Wimbledon to become the first man ever to win 15 grand slam titles. And as if that isn’t enough his wife had twins. I mean he hardly had time to digest what he had done in tennis, let alone the birth of his first children. Sure he took off a month since Wimbledon, but that makes it even harder to come back and just dominate. I think you realize what I’m getting it. It would be very unfair to write Roger off for the US Open just because of this one tournament. There is still Cincinnati, and when it comes to the US Open Roger will always be very hard to beat. I don’t think Roger tanked this match, tanking is not a part of his vocabulary.

Saying that Roger does not care about MS events is just rubbish. No doubt Roger will be disappointed about this loss, but he will also realize it is really no big deal. I’d prefer he loses to Tsonga then Murray actually. I’d rather he gets ready for Cincinnati and really give it his best shot there. As for the match, like I said I only watched the first two sets, and when Roger broke in the first game of the third set I thought the match was over. When I came home to see that Roger lost I must admit I was quite shocked. Especially after learning that he was up 5-1! I saw some highlights and it looked like he really choked horribly. Very unlike Roger of late. But he was also down 0-40 on his serve at 5-6 and facing 3 match points.
So at least he did well to force the tie break, but again in the tie break he served a double on match point, which is unlike the Roger we have gotten to know of late. Even in the first set he had an easy pass at 4-4 to break Tsonga but missed it long. And again on set point he missed and easy backhand with Tsonga at the net. I just thought Roger would win this one after he easily won the second set and went a break up in the third. Losing from two breaks up in the third set is really unlike Roger, I’m pretty sure that has never happened with him. So that is disappointing, lest be honest. But like I said I’m not gonna read too much into this loss. Roger is after all a father now and for now I don’t expect him to win every single match he plays. Lets give the guy a break.
Lets see what happens at Cincinnati. For now Roger is still my firm favorite to win the US Open.

Ever disappointed when Roger loses, especially when he was ahead. Of course the media will make a BIG DEAL out of this (all the time). Denise

They will make a big deal cos Roger is the GOAT and he has many haters. Simple as that. Ru-an

Call it denial, I have a feeling he tanked at the tail end of the match just to avoid meeting Murray. Maybe he just not ready to face top players yet. Dippy

Good point. I dont think he tanked but maybe he did so subconsciously to avoid losing to Murray before the US Open. Very good point, im impressed

I guess a lot things leading to him subconsciously doing it, tanking is a little harsh of a word I must admit.
1. Adjusting to having twin with him on tour
2. Prep for US Open – the lost will give indication on things to fix
3. State of mind – too many good things happen in such short time, he needs this to pace himself again.
Moving on to remaining 4 – I want to see Tsonga vs Roddick in the final. Dippy

Quite amusing.
I just dugg this.
I think Songa has that raw talent to do this to players, even players like Federer.
Still, can’t win everything.

Pardon, Ru-an, am going to comment on the Murray/Tsonga match, am real sorry that Tsonga could not beat Murray as I just cannot stomach this guy, his arrogance is nauseating. Just hope that Roger will be able to do the job. So sorry about Roger’s loss yesterday, but we look forward to Cincy and USOpen. Good luck, Roger! Dolores

Yeah i dont like Murray either, but he is playing ok i guess. I dont like it when he shouts ‘C’mon!’ after every point he wins. Its extremely arrogant like you say. Ru-an

Hey thanks for pointing me to the archive, it works well but only goes back to Dec 2008 (or was that when you started the blog?)
Also the loss to Tsonga was a freak one, being 5-1 one up in a deciding set and then to lose it is a freak result which can’t really be read into.
Also consider the fact Federer won 18 games to Tsongas 13 + 2 Tiebreaks. Had that been a 5 setter Fed would have won it, no worries.
Judging by Nadals inability to keep up his running for more than a set the only challange to Federers US Open defence is Murray, who I just can’t see winning a slam next year.
I predicted on a certain forum Roddick and Davydenko to win the Rogers and Cincinnati, which was widely riddiculed, but if Roddick can beat Murray I’m halfway there!
But in reality while I do want to see Roddick take the Rogers I hope Fed takes Cinci as he could do with the points comfort to keep number one through at least next summer. Paul

Hi Paul yes thats when i started blogging. Why do you think Murray wont win a slam next year? Im sorry that your man Roddick lost to Del Potro. I didnt see the match but Roddick had MP and he served a double on break point so he had his chances. Del Potro is good but hes going to be better. Ru-an

Sorry I made a typo, I meant to say I can’t see Murray winning a slam this year, or in other words the impending US Open.
Next year is too far away to predict those type of things. Paul

Well for me Murrays best chance to win a slam yet will be the USO this year. But i do think he needs to attack more. Im not sure he can win a slam with junk balling and counter punching. Ru-an

I hope DelP beats Murray. As for USOpen draw, yikes Nadal might end up in Roger’s half. Hope Nadal goes to Murray’s half :-) Dippy

Hi Ruan, I´m back I took holidays in Scandinavian. I watch Roger´s match(Viasat Sport Estocolmo just a pleasure to hear European commentators about Roger), I agree absolutely with you, I´m sure Roger didn´t feel fit and prefer to lose to Tsonga,he did as much as posible to lose, you know mental´s power… ines

Great to have to back Ines! I hope you enjoyed your holiday. I think Roger was already thinking about his match with Murray when he was up 5-1 and then Tsonga just started playing amazing. Ru-an

I think he wasn’t motivated enough to win. As usual he shows he typical effortless MS face . And yes I support Ines that he prefer to lose to Tsonga than wasting efforts against Murray. rusev
