Did the Williams Sisters Kill Women’s Tennis?

As you know I don’t write much about women’s tennis, but with the Serena Williams controversy, the return of Clijsters and Henin, and possibly the worst number one in the history of female tennis in Dinara Safina, it has been hard not to think about the state of the women’s game. When it comes to the female game, they simply can’t rival the men’s game in terms of skill, athleticism, and mental prowess. So what attracts people to the women’s game if the men are better in every department? Maybe the question should be what is different about the women’s game, since everything is not always about being better. For me the difference in the sexes is that the women’s game is more graceful, or it used to be anyway. I think it’s hard to be more graceful than Roger, but still in general women are more graceful than men.
I remember the days of Martina Hingis. In many ways she was the Roger Federer of women’s tennis, even more so than Justine Henin. Not only was she also from Switzerland, but she had all the skills and talent that reminded of the GOAT. So for me it was sad to see the Williams sisters come on the scene, and basically just blast her off the court with raw power. I mean the differences in physical build was just too vast for Hingis to keep up. In many ways that marked the death of women’s tennis, because from that day on mindless ball bashing and ugly grunting would rule over graceful, talented tennis with a brain. The Williams sisters are of course African-American, which put them in a certain gene pool which make them almost super human in athletic terms.
If you look at most of the top track athletes and basketball players for instance, they are mostly black for this very reason. They are just bigger and stronger than the average Caucasian. I have my own theory for why this is the case, but if I mention it here I will surely be accused of being a racist. The point is Martina Hingis simply had no answer to the raw power and athletic abilities of the Williams sisters, and they started dominating her. Thankfully players like Henin came along which could match the Williams sisters in power, at least to a certain extent. Henin isn’t nearly as massive as the Williams sisters, but her legs are quite strong and she has very good technique. So with good footwork and a sound technique she gave herself a fighting chance against the Williams’.

If it wasn’t for her, the Williams’ would have been even more dominant. She was one of the very few who could stand up to that kind of raw power. Clijsters also has the ability to that as she has shown at the US Open this year. The comeback of Henin and Clijsters is great news for the women’s game. Clijsters is unique in that she has a white skin but also has a very powerful build, and when it comes to power tennis she doesn’t have much to fear from the Williams’. Maria Sharapova can also hit quite a heavy ball, but again when it comes to physical power she is way behind the Williams’. Sharapova can match the Williams’ for power when she is in the position to it the ball, but the Williams’ move much better. I think because the Williams sisters came along the female game has evolved in the direction of power.
The other players had to become more physical and powerful to keep up with them. This is why I think the women’s game has died, at least to a certain extent. The one thing that set the women’s game aside from the men’s game, grace, is now mostly a thing of history. It seems everyone in the women’s game has now followed the Williams sisters with their ugly grunts and mindless ball bashing. In the men’s game power and athleticism was always going to be part of the game, and the women was never going to catch up. But at least they has grace on their side, and because the game was not all power, there was room for skill and tactics. Because of the power in the men’s game, using certain tactics and game plans to outsmart your opponent has lessened in importance.
The men’s game is much more about reaction these days than in the days of the wooden racquet for instance. Touch and finesse is much less prominent these days, although a genius like Roger is still able to use it to his advantage. Someone like Andy Murray also deserves a mention here. Before the Williams sisters came along touch and finesse was still a very big part of the female game, and it was the one big difference between the men’s and women’s game. It was the one reason why people could still be interested in the female game. These days it’s hard for me to understand why anyone would want to watch the women’s game rather than the men’s game. If you are a guy you may find women more interesting. But even then, why not watch the fashion channel instead?
Supermodels are better looking than tennis players, aren’t they? They are much more graceful and attractive than the muscular ball bashers of the modern female game. When you watch female tennis these days it’s like being inside a torture chamber. All that grunting and ball bashing is just too much for me to bare. If I want to see beautiful women I buy the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition or switch on the fashion channel. The graceful beauty and elegance of Steffi Graff and Martina Hingis is now something of the past, and it all started with two sisters. I don’t feel like there is anything interesting about watching the Williams’. Some people may say that their athletic abilities and power makes for good viewing, but if you want to see that you will find much better quality in the men’s game guaranteed.
Rafa and Roger’s athleticism dwarfs the Williams sisters, and so does their power. And aside from that there is no disgraceful grunting and they actually look like naturals. The Williams’ don’t look natural at all. I don’t know if you have noticed this, but their strokes look very mechanical, as if it only came from hours and hours on the practice court. I happen to think that in pure tennis terms they are not very talented at all. They are physical specimens, and all they did was spend hours and hours on the practice court to manufacture their strokes. So it all comes down pretty much to hard work, and no raw talent. Even Rafa with his unorthodox forehand and moon balls is much more talented than them. What is interesting about mindless-, grunting-, talentless-, arrogant, ball bashing tennis? Can anyone tell me?

Hey ru-an,
, I may be the only fan of both Roger and Serena – I guess i just love great champions.
I’m sad to say this is gonna be my last comment.
I’ve been trying to ignore the anti-williamses remarks for awhile, since i’m here because i admire Roger and enjoy your analysis of his tennis.
But i’m realizing that, besides Roger and Mirka
Once again, i agree what she did at the US Open was completely out of line, but to me that is no justification to keep on bashing her, (while i come here to read/talk about Roger).
Esp when this leads to comments on her looks and her race. As a very frequent visitor to South Africa (my ex is capetonian), i am especially sensitive and know, as well as you, where things like that can come from and lead to – even if it’s not conciously intended a certain way when said or written down.
I’m not judging your comments, I wanna believe you are not malicious towards these girls just because they’re big and black (although i’m not sure about the much-less thoughtful ‘jason’ on whom you based this last post). But i guess it makes me not enjoy the blog anymore to keep reading about it. So this will be my last log-in.
Too bad, but thanks for a few months of great posts.
Good luck with the blog!

Well that makes me sad that you would stop reading my blog because i made a few posts about the Williams sisters. Of course i wouldnt be writing about them if there was news about Roger, because i shouldnt even be mentioning them on my blog. I dont like them, ive told you this before. But i think nonetheless my posts about them have been justified. What Serena did at the USO was unacceptable and i think my lastest post about what they did to the womens game was actually quite accurate and intelligent. I am neither a fan of their tennis nor of them as human beings, and i think the same is the case with Jason. For me they are the anti-Fed pretty much with their arrogance and all out power tennis. I dont think im an angel but its a shame you have to stop reading my blog just because of me being critical of Serena Williams. Its also a shame that people constantly have racism on their minds. In the world i live in i treat everyone as if they are the same race. If i dislike someone and they happen to be black then im not going to hold back just because people would think im racist. I couldnt care less what people think. You should know by now that im someone that speaks my truth no matter what people think of it. Anyway i enjoyed having you as a reader. Take care

if they just happened to be white you will not say any of this shits that you had wrote.. you’re a fag! that’s it! and whatever you say people will look at you as a bitch! get a life! serena and venus are way better than you in all aspect and dimension of human perspective. you are no one and they are somebody that’s it! bitch!

Noooo YOU are a nobody who knows nothing about life and tennis. They brought nothing to womens tennis but ugly tennis and arrogant personalities. Im not surprised at all the a fan of those clowns would insult me the way you have here. It just proves my point! Roger Federer is what made the sport recognizable world, not those silly sisters. End of story. Im way better than those sisters in any human perspective cos im not nearly that arrogant, im probably a better tennis player myself, i dont threaten to kill people, im actually smart, i dont say i will beat any mens player outside the top 200 and then lose 6-1, 6-2 to Karsten Braasch who admiited he played like 600 in the world. You are a clown and the worst commenter ive ever seen. NEXT!!
Btw race has nothing to do with this, I JUST DONT LIKE THEM.
When you talk about the Williams sisters, it seems most people are viewing it from the racial side. Even if before you discussed anything specific physical specimens about them. So, sometimes I wonder who means to be a racist here?
The main point has always been that Williams sisters influence to tennis is negative because it is directing the game towards a mindless power game. I don’t think there’s anything racist with that, I think it’s a simple fact.
One thing I’d like to add about the sisters arrogance is that in early 2000s, at the peak of their domination, they were publicly loud about moving to the ATP. Is there a better epitomy for arrogance than that? I mean c’mon… how many slams did they win? Serena only has 1/2 of Steffi’s. Heck, even the two combined is only equal to Evert and less than Steffi.
If they were granted the pass to ATP? I have not the slightest doubt they will be immediately blown off the court even by low ranked guys (I talk about somewhere in the 100s or 200s).

Yeah thats a shame that people think that way. Just because im South African and dont like Serena Williams i am racist? I see that as racism towards me if people want to get technical. You know im sick of people being over sensitive about things like race and skin color. I will keep calling things the way i see it and if people want to judge me by that it is their problem. John Isner was recently asked what is the level of the womens game, and he said that the women are on the level of the men ranked in the 800’s. Therefor women should stick to being graceful. The Williams sisters would get blown off the court by Devon Britton, Rogers 1st round USO opponent, who is ranked somewhere in the thousands.

I think they said they can beat any guy ranked outside of the top 200. And what is more is that Braasch was a party animal and he had some beers before playing them. Lol!

Oh Ru-an. I have to disagree with you on this topic. I think that the Williams sisters SAVED tennis. Ten years ago, where I come from NOBODY was interested in tennis. We never watched it, did not know who was who, unless they are John McEnroe, and never played it. Then the Williams sisters came along and made me watch tennis more and more. It means alot to me and to others where I come from that they are playing such a “country club” sport. They come from the ghetto and made it to center court. Some people may say Serena is TOO MUSCULAR, or that Venus is too lanky. I think they look GREAT. They brought DIVERSITY to tennis and to sports that was SORELY NEEDED. I will actually be sad to see them stop playing tennis professionally. You can not deny the impact that they have had for women not only in tennis, but women in sports.

The whole thing about this racism stuff is just pure BS. Racism used to rule the world in the past. However, since it is banned for good, it takes another form… in that oversensitive people would take racism issues in an argument that would protect them and possibly use it to go against the people they disagree with (when it can apply, even in the slightest sense). All of these is despite the argument itself not being racist whatsoever. These people accuse their opponents in the argument of being racist. The question is, who’s really racist now? Who thought first of racism? I think these oversensitive people only need to look in the mirror for the answer.
“Black people has higher risks of heart attack compared to Asians or Caucasians” — is that racist? No, it’s just the fact of medical statistics examinations. The same goes w/ “black people generally dominates in athletic abilities”… is that racist? No, it’s just a cold, truthful fact.
Being racist is if we insult their origins & how they were in the distant past. In no way did Ru-an or me insult anyone for their race origins. What we are critical of is the style of their game and their adverse effects to the game’s progress… and anyone has the right to be, even against Roger, it’s just a matter of opinion.
But of course now, I will be most likely accused of being racist again after this post.

Exactly right. Racism has become much more subtle now since it was banned, but make no mistake, it is still there. People calling me racist is a peRFect example of that. The fact that i cant stand Serena Williams automatically makes me a racist. How racist is that??? I have the greatest respect for people like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Mohammed Ali, Martin Luther King and the list goes on. I know how sensitive people are about sexism and racism, so i was prepared for this kind of reaction from certain people. For the people who are judging me, i say show me one thing i said that was not the truth. As far as im concerned as long as i speak the truth i will write whatever i want. This is not a people pleasing blog, and ive never pleaded with people to read my blog. They either like it or they dont. If people want to take offense to that it is their problem and they may want to do some serious soul searching themselves.

OK, this is my last post on the thread (not the blog). On this, I would like to make a very clear point on the racism issues that have been thrown here.
My points are:
1. We get accused of being racist because we don’t like Williams sisters, who happen to be blacks.
2. That accusation implies that if we don’t like some blacks, we don’t like all blacks and therefore we’re racists. And this implies that they perceive all blacks are the same
3. Along this line of logic, it can be inferred that they (the accusers) are the ones who are racists, not us.
It’s irrelevant, but if anyone would like to know, I am a big fan & admirer of many black sportsmen, actors and figures, too.
Examples include:
Sportsmen: Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Evander Holyfield, etc.
Actors: Will Smith, Samuel Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Laurence Fishburne
Figures: Oprah, Tyra Banks.
This concludes my post on this thread.

I wish I could say your racial attitudes shock me, sir. I know such things must be common in South Africa; I have my own country to show me what happens in societies with recent histories such as ours, and you are starting to remind me of my mother at her most embarrassing.
But what is really starting to get to me is your sexism. So a woman is no use doing anything unless she’s looking good to please you? Has it occurred to you that some of us might have other priorities in life?
And all these fancy additions to your blog are starting to trouble my browser.

Hi.Ruan,
It is extreemly sad that somebody like you can be allowed to be writing and making racist comment about tenis. Your comments make you a lot worse than a racist.Reading through the content of your article alone makes me sick to my stomach.WHY DO YOU HATE THESE GIRLS SO MUCH.There are so many tenis players who use a lot of power in their game;the list is endless.I honestly believe that you are one of those remaining racist white who still racialize sports especially tenis. You still think is a white game alone and you find it difficult to suck it up that black ladies can be doing well in tenis which has never happend before. They have brought us a lot of joy over the years and we are proud of them.Of course when they make mistake they must be made aware of it and face the consequences but not to the extent of attacking their game.Serena has won all the slams on all the surfaces that tells you it is not only power but also talent.Roger’s game as good as it is still has a lot of power in it.I am even surprised that you mentioned Sharaprova, you said she has lots of skill and you were implying that she doesn’t play much of a power game, this is ridiculous.Even your clisters used to go to the gym to build muscles for her tenis game and your Henin that never gives whoever beats her any credit she must have one excuse or the other or retire so as not to give opponent any credit.People like you are not fit to be commenting on tenis or any sport whatsoever.Get this into your brain, THE DAYS OF BLONDE BLUE-EYED, SLIM, MODEL-LIKE WHITE GIRLS ONLY TENIS PLAYERS ARE OVER,IF YOU DO NOT WANT ANY COLORED PEOPLE IN SPORT, MOVE TO ANOTHER PLANET OR CHANGE THE COLOR OF YOUR BLOOD TO WHITE.This is the pattern that I have noticed you white guys always like to pull down any successful black or colored athletes who is on top but you will not succeed with the Williams.

Here’s why I know that you are racially ignorant:
You honestly thought that after writing this article that you weren’t going to get labeled a racist.
“I have my own theory for why this is the case, but if I mention it here I will surely be accused of being a racist.”
So, implicit in that statement is your belief that when all is said and done, you -weren’t- going to be accused of being a racist.
But, surprise (to you, not to some) surprise, when all was said and done, you -were- accused of being a racist.
(Sadly, not everyone realized you’re also a sexist as well.)
I’m here to educate you, not with opinion, but with fact.
The definition of racist, according to webster’s dictionary is this:
“a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, -usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior…”
according to answer.com it’s this
“a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others”
I have a question for you:
If you answer this with anything other than a yes or no, it’s because you realize that your answer is going to take the form of you admitting a truth you can’t accept.
The truth of the matter is you are a bit ignorant. Because you are ignorant, you won’t say “Yes” and you won’t say “No.”
Sadly, your ignorance will force you to respond with some kind of explanation, or justification, because you’re just not confident enough to answer the question which, honestly, you already have in your blog.
But, I enjoy watching people do I what I expect, so, here’s the million dollar question.
Do you believe that when it comes to grace, in women’s tennis, that white players like Hingis are superior to black players like the Williams sisters?

Wow. You are soooo off base. it’s okay not to like the Williams, but to praise Hingis at the same time. Do your research—seh was the biggest bia on tour. BY FAR!!!! Very rude to everyone, and dumb as a rock (Serena was right–she did lack a formal education, and it showed). A majority of the girls on tour are arrogant–not just the Williams. And they’ve helpedthe tour in the smae way Tiger has helped golf. Without them, there wouldn’t be sponsors or high ratings. And it’s not all just power, they have more mental toughness than any of the Russians or Serbians. Ana ivanovic is a mental mess out there, and so is jankovic and Dementieva. Tennis is a thinking sport, and like Federer, the Williams have the physical power, and mental power.

Hi, I completly agreee with you about the criticism and also I don’t think you’re racist (even though I’m not white). The fact is Williams sisters are ballbashers, the biggest ballbashers in the women’s game. When they first appeared in the competition that’s what clearly gave them the edge over the others as nobody was kind of prepared to face such a huge physical power. I think they are not good at all in playing tactical game, which is why Henin with her different style defeated them so many times at the big stages. I actually see the situation improving because thanks to Henin’s success she started off an era of smart power-game. Others are starting to learn from her and play with brains not just smack a ball back as quickly as possible. I think Elena Dementieva, even though she’s not successful at slams, learnt how to play with the Williamses and over the years she’s improved a lot. Her win in a very tough match against Serena in the Olympics is a proof of that. Also Kirilenko seems to use power wisely, Wozniacki had her annoying moonballing (but it works!) and Petrova (on her day) can do wonders, too. So the hope is not lost.
