Q. I’m sure you’ll probably say ‘take it one match at a time’. Third round against Roger Federer, can you beat him?
BERNARD TOMIC: Well, I saw the papers this morning (laughter).
Well, if he gets that far. I mean, like I said, the first round is my goal, to beat this guy. I do struggle against some guys out there. I don’t know how this guy can play. If the possibility comes for me to win that first match, I’ll look for my next round, which is also tough.
I would love to get in that position to play Roger in the third round. He has to get there as well. You don’t know what can happen. Tennis is a funny sport. So we’ll see.
Yesterday I made a post about Roger downplaying the hype surrounding his possible third round match with Tomic. He said Tomic had to make it that far first, and that he would be making a mistake if he was already thinking about his third round match with Roger. Well Tomic responded in kind. When asked whether he can beat the four time Australian Open champion, he responded that Roger may not make it that far. I thought that was a good reply from Tomic. He also states that he read the papers and he would no doubt have seen what Roger said about him. Why just take the blow on the chin? Yes this is Roger Federer we are talking about, but it is also tennis which is played between two competitors. If you don’t believe you can beat whoever is across the net, you have no business showing up.
You don’t back down from the challenge, even if you are up against the GOAT. So I think it was the right response from Tomic. I don’t think he was being overly cocky either. I think he was just being honest like Roger was. Saying that tennis is a funny sport and unpredictable is exactly right. I think Tomic means business and Roger has his work cut out for him. Last year Roger destroyed Tomic but this is a different scenario. Tomic already beat Djokovic this year, even though it was just an exho, and he then won his first title in Sydney. His preparation for the event could not have been better, and he is at his best in Australia. Upsetting Roger is not out of the question, but I still like Roger’s chances. It’s hard to see Tomic going from a straight set schooling to beating Roger in one year. Having said that, I expect a much tougher battle if they do happen to meet.
